Terms and Conditions

  1. These terms and conditions apply to any work done for the Client (“you”) by Katie Finnegan (“me/I”).
  2. You are under no obligation to offer me work; neither am I under any obligation to accept work offered by you.
  3. I will provide services as mutually agreed and confirmed in writing.
  4. The work will be carried out unsupervised at such times and places as determined by me, using my own equipment.
  5. I reserve the right to refuse to edit/proofread content that advocates or incites violence, hatred or discrimination in contravention of national and international laws.
  6. This agreement is subject to the laws of England and Wales, and we both agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the English and Welsh courts.
  7. Either party has the right to terminate a contract for services if there is a serious breach of its terms.
  8. Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998, you and I may keep on record such information (e.g. contact details) as is necessary. Either may view the other’s records to ensure that they are relevant, correct and up to date.
  9. I confirm that I am self-employed and am responsible for my own income tax and National Insurance contributions.

  1. Before agreeing to work for you, I need to see your full document. I will then send you a full quotation for the total cost and provide a date for when I can return the work.
  2. Please confirm in writing that you accept my quotation and timescale for completion; I will then proceed with the agreed work.
  3. The completed work will be returned on or before the date agreed, for the agreed fee.
  4. If you request additional tasks to be completed once I have started the agreed work, I reserve the right to renegotiate the fee and/or the deadline.

  1. If you fail to send me your work on the agreed date without suitable notice, I reserve the right to reject your work.
  2. If you cancel a project after I have started work on your file, you will be liable to pay for the work that has already been completed.
  3. If due to personal circumstances/illness, I am unable to complete the agreed work within the agreed timescale, I will let you know as soon as possible and try to renegotiate a new deadline or make arrangements for another editor/proofreader to complete your work.

  1. You will pay me a fee per number of words OR an agreed flat fee for the job OR a fee per hour.
  2. I accept payment by bank transfer, PayPal, or cash or cheque deposit into any NatWest branch. I will provide bank transfer and PayPal details when I return your work. You will be responsible for paying any bank charges associated with transferring the payment to me.
  3. Unless agreed otherwise at the outset, payment should be made as soon as possible and within ten days from receipt of the completed work.
  4. For lengthy documents (e.g. PhD theses), I will return the work in installments (e.g. chapters), with payment for each installment due before continuing with the work.

  1. I will not share your name with any third person. The nature and content of the work will be kept strictly confidential.
  2. Your name will only be used in my promotional materials with your prior permission.
  3. Any content created by me as part of the copy-editing/proofreading process will become copyright of you, unless otherwise agreed.

  1. Plagiarism and breach of copyright are serious offences and carry severe penalties if detected. It is your responsibility to avoid plagiarism and breach of copyright.
  2. I will not work on content I suspect to be plagiarised. If I start work and subsequently detect plagiarised content, I will stop work on the document immediately. I reserve the right to charge for any work already carried out on the document.
  3. I will not write, rewrite or paraphrase your work for you, nor will I add content from other people’s work into your document.
  4. The grade you receive from your academic institution or the acceptance of a piece of work for publication relies on circumstances beyond my control. I cannot be held legally responsible for disappointing grades or your work being rejected.
  5. I aim to deliver a highly reliable and accurate service. However, I cannot guarantee that your document will be 100% “error free”. Please check your document carefully and contact me within seven days in the case of any outstanding errors being discovered, which I will then correct.
  6. I strongly recommend you ask your supervisor or tutor whether it is permissible for you to use an editing/proofreading service.
  7. I reserve the right to refuse to edit/proofread content that advocates or incites violence, hatred or discrimination in contravention of national and international laws.

  1. I am not liable in relation to the content of customer documents including misleading or defamatory statements or the infringement of third party copyright.
  2. I am not liable for consequential damages of any nature including loss of profit, loss of business or loss of data incurred as a result of using my services.
